David Redding, a Boston College graduate (1985), served nine years in the U.S. Army Infantry and Special Forces before earning his law degree from Wake Forest University in 1997. Based in Charlotte, NC, he specializes in commercial litigation, handling complex disputes in state and federal courts and arbitration. He is also a founding member and former CEO of F3, a men’s fitness, fellowship, and faith organization.

The Birth of F3: A Movement of Purpose

F3 began as a simple idea: a free, peer-led workout group for men. Yet, as Dredd explains, it evolved into something far greater—a platform for leadership and transformation.


The mission of F3 is "to plant, grow, and serve small workout groups for the invigoration of male community leadership." From its humble beginnings in Charlotte, North Carolina, F3 grows into a national and even global movement, proving the power of a simple, purposeful idea.


Dredd’s vision roots in his own search for meaning and connection. After serving in the U.S. Army, he longs for the camaraderie and sense of purpose he experiences in the military. Recognizing that many men share this void, he creates F3 as a space for men to challenge themselves physically, mentally, and emotionally while building strong bonds with others.

“I don’t want to spend the next 25 years of my life just practicing law and raising my kids,” Dredd shares. “I want to have an impact. I want to do something vital.” This yearning for significance becomes the foundation of F3, where men not only push their physical limits but also cultivate leadership skills and serve their communities.

Unlocking the Cage: Overcoming Internal Barriers

One of the most profound ideas Dredd shares during the podcast is the metaphor of the prison cell locked from the inside. “The prison is locked from the inside,” Dredd says. “And the first step we need to take is to unlock it ourselves.”

The Dolphin symbolizes what you do best—the skills or talents that come naturally to you and set you apart. For Dredd, this is teaching and leading, skills he hones during his time in the military. “A dolphin in water is in its element,” he explains. “It’s where it thrives.”

The Daffodil represents the people or purpose you are uniquely wired to serve. For Dredd, this is “accelerating men”—helping them become better versions of themselves. He believes that when individuals align their Dolphin (skills) with their Daffodil (purpose), they unlock extraordinary potential. This intersection, which he calls the D2X (Dolphin-Daffodil Cross), is where we can make the greatest impact.


“You’ve got to do what you love doing,” Dredd urges. “But you’ve also got to do it for the people you’re meant to serve.”


Building a Community: The Power of Shared Leadership

F3 is more than a fitness group; it’s a leadership incubator. At its core is the belief that leadership is not a title or position but a set of actions that inspire and empower others. Dredd emphasizes the importance of building a community where individuals can learn, grow, and lead together.


One of F3’s most impactful frameworks is the Whetstone and Blade, a mentorship model that encourages men to both mentor and be mentored. The Whetstone sharpens the Blade, symbolizing the reciprocal relationship where both individuals grow and improve. “For a high-impact man to reach his potential,” Dredd explains, “he needs to be both a Whetstone and a Blade.”

“If we are as pure a prism as we can possibly be,” Dredd says, “then pure light will come out of us, multiplied.”
